October 3-8 Couples Rafting and Fishing Program in Oregon for Veterans and their Spouse/Significant Other

  • Who: (6) Veterans and their spouse or significant other
  • What: Fishing the Rogue River on a guided drift boat through Class III rapids. Lodge stays each night of the trip. Group processing time.
  • When: October 3 – 8, 2022
  • Where: Rogue River, Oregon w/ Briggs Rogue River Trips
  • Cost: All costs are covered by Higher Ground

A few notes about our program:

  • Our programs are for veterans with symptoms of PTS, TBI, MST, and/or polytrauma.
  • One-Time Experience: Due to our lengthy wait list, we are only able to provide one week-long program. We provide resources to find recreation in your home community, as well as 3 years of follow-up after you have completed our program.
  • Recreational Therapy: Our programs incorporate daily group discussions to reflect on the impact of recreation, typically they last about an hour right before dinner.

As we continue to grow our veteran programs, our goal at Higher Ground is to prioritize participant selection regionally. In doing so, it is our hope that we can continue to create a community of HG Alum that can return home post-program and continue to build on the recreation and leisure skills learned throughout program. HG October Climbing Program for Veterans @Joshua Tree @ Joshua Tree National Park, CA

Our week-long outdoor therapeutic recreation programs support those experiencing symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Military Sexual Trauma, and/or Polytrauma. The program is designed to help you discover a renewed sense of belonging, improve quality of life, and connect you with a community.

 

HGLA October Climbing Sports Program for Male & Female Veterans

  • Who: 10 veterans
  • What: A week of recreational therapy through climbing and camping — no experience necessary
  • When: October 9-15, 2022
  • Where: Joshua Tree National Park, CA
  • Accommodations:  camping, tents sleeping bags provided
  • Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for veteran participants
  • Veterans must first apply here!

 

A few notes about our program

  • Registration: Our programs are for veterans with symptoms of PTSD, TBI, MST, and/or polytrauma. If you would like to attend a program, you must first register on our website here. From there, a Participant Coordinator will be in contact with you regarding available opportunities for you. If you have already registered but your contact information has changed, please let us know so we can continue to inform you of upcoming programs!   • What: A week of recreational therapy through breaking wild mustangs and Horsemanship (you will not be riding horses)— no experience necessary
  • When: November 6-12, 2022
  • Where: Caliente, CA (Wild Horse Rescue)
  • Accommodations:  Cottages/cabins on the ranch
  • Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for veterans

HG Singles Ice Climbing Program for Male and Female Veterans @ Lake Placid, NY

HG January 25-31 Ice Climbing Program for Male & Female Veterans

  • Who: (6) Veterans/Service Members. This program is open to both female and male veterans with their supporters.
    • Note: As part of our individuals programming, you may bring a supporter (over 18), which can be a close family member or friend who is a significant part of your daily life  to attend the program – free of cost.   
  • What: Intro to ice climbing with Paradox Sports.  NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. All skill levels welcome.
  • Where: Lake Placid, NY 
  • Accommodations: Shared bunk rooms on second floor of Bed and Breakfast
  • Accessibility: The approach can range from 20 – 45 minutes of navigating various terrain (uphill/downhill on snow, ice and on uneven ground) before arriving at the climbing site.
  • Cost: FREE – Higher Ground Covers ALL program related costs
