Our week-long outdoor therapeutic recreation programs support those experiencing symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Military Sexual Trauma, and/or Polytrauma. The program is designed to help you discover a renewed sense of belonging, improve quality of life, and connect you with a community.

 

 

July Idaho Waters Sports Family Program for Veterans and their kids

  • Who: 5 male or female veterans and their kids!!! 
  • What: A week of family-friendly recreational therapy through water sports, including waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, fishing, rafting and more – no experience necessary
  • When: July 18-24, 2019
  • Where: Lake Pettit, Stanley, Idaho
  • Accommodations: Family cabins
  • Accessibility: Some uneven terrain and steps, most activities can be adapted
  • Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for both veterans and their families

 

A few notes about our program

  • Registration: Our programs are for veterans with symptoms of PTSD, TBI, MST, and/or polytrauma. If you would like to attend a program, you must first register on our website here. From there, a Participant Coordinator will be in contact with you regarding available opportunities for you. If you have already registered but your contact information has changed, please let us know so we can continue to inform you of upcoming programs!   • One-Time Experience: Due to our lengthy waitlist, we are only able to provide one week-long program. We provide resources to find recreation in your home community, as well as 3 years of follow-up after you have completed our program.
  • Recreational Therapy: Our programs incorporate daily group discussions to reflect on the impact of recreation, typically they last about an hour right before dinner.

August Idaho White Water Kayaking Program for Male Veterans and their Supporters

  • Who: 9 male veterans and their supporters
    • Note: As part of our individuals programming, you may bring a supporter, which can be a close family member or friend who is a significant part of your daily life (civilian over 18 or veteran) to attend the program, free of cost.
  • What: A week of recreational therapy through white water kayaking and rafting — no experience necessary
  • When: August 9 – 15, 2019
  • Where: Salmon River, Idaho
  • Accommodations: Primitive beach camping, tents provided
  • Accessibility: Must be able to enter and exit unsteady raft and traverse rocky, sandy beaches with assistance
  • Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for both veterans and supporters

  • Who: 9 male veterans and their significant others
  • What: A week of recreational therapy through water sports, including waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, kayaking and more – no experience necessary
  • When: Sept 8 -14, 2019
  • Where: Fay Island, CA
  • Accommodations: Private rooms with private bathrooms in shared house
  • Accessibility: Must be able to ascend stairs and maintain core balance, will have a water sit-ski
  • Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for both veterans and supporters

HGNY Equine/Horseback Riding Program @ Beaver Hollow Conference Center

Higher Ground New York (HGNY) is pleased to host its second Equine/Horseback Riding week-long program, in collaboration with Wolcott Farms, for Veterans and their spouses/partners who currently reside in the Western New York and surrounding region.  This program is open to new and skilled riders.  Activities include equine assisted therapeutic recreation and learning opportunities including: horse handling, grooming and tacking, and indoor/outdoor horseback riding.  Space for this program is limited.  If you are interested in participating in this program and have not already registered for Higher Ground Military Programs, please register by clicking the link below.

Higher Ground Covers ALL related costs for Veterans and their spouse/partner for the program… including transportation.

In collaboration with Beaver Hollow, HGNY will provide a comprehensive recreational therapy and alternative health and wellness program for Veterans and their spouse/partner.  Activities include: morning stretch, horseback riding, fishing, nutrition, fitness, team building activities and daily group processing.

  • Accessibility: Adaptive equipment for a limited number of golfers
