Lots of Learning in Big Sky, Montana! Seven Higher Ground clinic leaders attended a 3 day ski leadership symposium in Big Sky. It was an incredible opportunity to collaborate with Adaptive Ski Schools in the Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho regions. All of our resorts operate a little different but it was great to share programming styles and clinic progressions. The most exciting new opportunity may be to join with the NAC (National Ability Center out of Park City, Utah) to create a freestyle team for our kids with disabilities.
The goal of the freestyle team is to train kids that may be looking to advance beyond Special Olympics and teach the etiquette and skills needed to do tricks. Many of our students have a greater interest in jumping and having other experiences in the parks and pipes than traditional race courses. Hopefully we will be able to start building some interest this season and then plan a date to compete against the kids from the NAC next year.
This symposium was also a great opportunity for the clinicians to build some early season skills on the over foot of fresh snow that fell while we were training, always an unexpected pleasure in November. We look forward to the event every year.
