Our week-long outdoor therapeutic recreation programs support those experiencing symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Military Sexual Trauma, and/or Polytrauma. The program is designed to help you discover a renewed sense of belonging, improve quality of life, and connect you with a community.
HGLA April Ocean Sports Program for Male & Female Veterans and their Supporters
- Who: 9 veterans and their supporters

- Note: As part of our individuals programming, you may bring a supporter, which can be a close family member or friend who is a significant part of your daily life (civilian over 18 or veteran) to attend the program, free of cost.
- What: A week of recreational therapy through kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing and camping — no experience necessary
- When: April 25 – May 1, 2021
- Where: Laguna Beach, CA
- Accommodations: camping, tents provided
- Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for both veterans and supporters
A few notes about our program
- Registration: Our programs are for veterans with symptoms of PTSD, TBI, MST, and/or polytrauma. If you would like to attend a program, you must first register on our website here. From there, a Participant Coordinator will be in contact with you regarding available opportunities for you. If you have already registered but your contact information has changed, please let us know so we can continue to inform you of upcoming programs! Just email militaryprogramparticipantcoordinator@highergroundusa.org with any relevant changes.
- One-Time Experience: Due to our lengthy waitlist, we are only able to provide one week-long program. We provide resources to find recreation in your home community, as well as 3 years of follow-up after you have completed our program.
- Recreational Therapy: Our programs incorporate daily group discussions to reflect on the impact of recreation, typically they last about an hour right before dinner.

May California Water Sports Couples Program
- Who: 9 veterans and their significant others
- What: A week of recreational therapy through water sports, including waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, kayaking and more – no experience necessary
- When: May 2-8, 2021
- Where: Fay Island, CA
- Accommodations: Private rooms with private bathrooms
- Accessibility: Must be able to ascend stairs and maintain core balance, will have a water sit-ski
- Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for both veterans and supporters

- Who: 10 veterans
- What: A week of recreational therapy through Equine Therapy and Horsemanship! — no experience necessary
- When: May 16-22, 2021
- Where: Caliente, CA (Wild Horse Rescue)
- Accommodations: Cottages/cabins on the ranch
- Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for veterans

June Ranch Rodeo Horseback Riding Program for Male and Female Veterans
- Who: 9 male and female veterans and their supporters (optional) Note: As part of our individuals programming, you may bring a supporter, which can be a close family member or friend who is a significant part of your daily life (civilian over 18 or veteran) to attend the program, free of cost.
- What: A week of recreational therapy through horseback riding, handling, roping, cattle sorting and more. All skills learned throughout the week will culminate in a final “Ranch Rodeo” competition among all participants —Interest in equine activities is preferred
- When: May 24-May 30, 2021
- Where: River Sage Stables in Bellevue, Idaho
- Accommodations: RVs
- Accessibility: Must be able to mount horse with assistance, maintain balance on moving horse, navigate RV (ascend stairs, navigate tight spaces)
- Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for both veterans and supporters

- Accessibility: Adaptive equipment for a limited number of golfers
