Our week-long outdoor therapeutic recreation programs support those experiencing symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Military Sexual Trauma, and/or Polytrauma. The program is designed to help you discover a renewed sense of belonging, improve quality of life, and connect you with a community.

August 5-11, 2020 Mixed Singles Week-long Shawangunk Mountains Rock Climbing Program

  • Who: 9 Veterans/Service Members and their supporters (family member or friend). This program is open to both female and male veterans.
  • What: A week of camaraderie through rock climbing, hiking, and various other outdoor activities.
  • Where: Shawangunk Mountains, NY
  • Cost: Higher Ground Covers ALL related costs for veterans and their supporter

A few notes about our program:

  • Registration: Our programs are for veterans with symptoms of PTSD, TBI, MST, and/or polytrauma. If you would like to attend a program, you must first register on our website under the Programs tab of our website. From there, a Participant Coordinator will be in contact with you regarding available opportunities for you. If you have already registered but your contact information has changed, please let us know so we can continue to inform you of upcoming programs!   • One-Time Experience: Due to our lengthy wait list, we are only able to provide one week-long program. We provide resources to find recreation in your home community, as well as 3 years of follow-up after you have completed our program.
  • Recreational Therapy: Our programs incorporate daily group discussions to reflect on the impact of recreation, typically they last about an hour right before dinner.

HG Veteran Program: Virtual Dog Training Series

When: Wednesday Aug 12/19/26 at 4pm PST / 7pm EST

What: Web Series Sessions – Just as we humans are adjusting to new times so are our dogs, in this series we are exploring ways not to just train our dogs for the changes, but also to be a continued source of comfort and fun.

Session 1: A relaxing walk and mindfulness with your dog
Daily walks don’t have to be a chore, they can be relaxing moments for both of you to take a break and enjoy the outdoors. Unlock your dog’s inner therapist for this stressful time!

Session 2: Back to Work, oh the anxiety!
Steps for adjusting to new routines and preventing separation anxiety in dogs as we begin to regularly leave the home again.

Session 3: Training for COVID & social distancing
We are all learning to interact differently and this carries over to our dogs as well! Learn some obedience skills to help and new etiquette rules for social distancing.

Materials: You, your dog, and any note-taking material (you’ll also have access to a recorded copy of the webinar).

    • Note: As part of our individuals programming, you may bring a supporter, which can be a close family member or friend who is a significant part of your daily life (civilian over 18 or veteran) to attend the program, free of cost.
  • What: A week of recreational therapy through white water kayaking and rafting — no experience necessary

Idaho Fly Fishing Couples Program for Male Veterans in Relationships

  • Who: 9 male veterans and their significant others
  • What: A week of recreational therapy through fly fishing and other activities– no experience necessary
  • When: August 21 – 27, 2020
  • Where: Warm River, Idaho
  • Accommodations: Lodge with private bathrooms
  • Accessibility: Must be able to navigate uneven terrain and get in and out of drift boats with assistance
  • Cost: HG covers all related costs, including travel costs for both veterans and supporters

Idaho Ranch Rodeo Horse Program for Male and Female Veterans 

  • Who: 9 male and female veterans
    • Note: Due to COVID-19, there will be no supporters on this program because of lodging limitations.
  • What: A week of recreational therapy through horseback riding, handling, roping, cattle sorting and more. All skills learned throughout the week will culminate in a final “Ranch Rodeo” competition among all participants — Interest in equine activities is preferred
  • When: TBD
  • Where: River Sage Stables in Bellevue, Idaho
  • Accommodations: RVs
  • Accessibility: Must be able to mount horse with assistance, maintain balance on moving horse, navigate RV (ascend stairs, navigate tight spaces)
