Eligibility and Requirements

Our instructors must be at least 18 years of age, preferred First Aid and CPR certifications, experience working with kids, and be able to commit to an entire season. Above all, Higher Ground is looking for instructors who are self-motivated, take initiative, and have a desire to work with people with disabilities.

    • Swimming/ water sports

Position Responsibilities and Duties

  • Report to Adaptive Program Manager & Adaptive Program Coordinators
  • Attend mandatory pre-season trainings
  • Actively engage with participants for the duration of summer programming
  • Facilitate recreational activities for participants
  • Lift equipment and gear up to 50-75 pounds
  • Establish positive therapeutic relationships with participants
  • Complete progress notes
  • Set up, breakdown and clean-up of all HG activities
  • Implement behavior management techniques
  • Adhere to all policies in the HG Employee Handbook
  • Assist participants with various activities of daily living, such as; feeding, transferring, changing, etc.
  • Weekend work is required

Internship Opportunities

What We Offer

Higher Ground offers seasonal internship opportunities across all our programming areas. If interested in therapeutic recreation, group and individual therapeutic methods, working with individuals with disabilities, or the nonprofit sphere, this organization will provide a unique environment to develop your skills.

Recreational Skills

The ideal intern candidate will have experience in some of the following: skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, rafting, cycling, fishing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, swimming, and rock climbing.

Ideal Candidates

We are seeking individuals who are highly motivated, organized, and have exceptional verbal and written communication skills. There are plenty of opportunities to help others within Higher Ground. For those who are pursuing their therapeutic recreation degree, we follow the ATRA standards of practice and NCTRC internship guidelines.

Winter/Spring – August 15
Summer – January 15
Fall (occasionally offered) – March 30
