CRU: Yoga & Golf

A one day yoga & golf event. Designed to offer CRU participants an introduction to or continued practice of yoga, followed by a golf clinic where participants have the opportunity to strengthen muscles, challenge activity skills, improve social interactions and provide stress relief with recreational therapy in an outdoor setting. Activity gear will be provided, simply dress appropriately for the weather.

CRU: Sailing

Higher Ground is partnering with Vet Sailing for an all-inclusive Sailing experience held in San Diego, CA!

6 Veterans/First-Responders will be Sailing in and around San Diego Bay and possibly the ocean (weather dependent), guided and instrlucted by experienced/veteran sailors. No experience is necessary; this is a fun way to learn the fundamentals of Sailing in a safe and comfortable environment, while enjoying the fresh ocean air and grand views!

CRU: Axe Throwing

A half-day axe throwing experience designed to support the mental and physical well-being of veterans by introducing them to the practice of axe throwing, fostering improved focus, stress relief, physical coordination, and a renewed sense of purpose through structured training and community engagement. Participants will gather and develop a sense of belonging and worth through community and axe throwing.

CRU: Wake Surfing

Higher Ground is hosting a chartered Wake Surfing boat adventure with Ian Scott, owner of IPS Surf and pro wake surfer, to deliver a therapeutic outdoor experience through wake surfing and camaraderie.

Participants will arrive at the boat launch at 9am for accountability and a safety brief, load up on the boat, and enjoy a day on the water of Long Lake where each participant will get around 30 minutes behind the boat depending on group size and riders ability. Lunch will be provided.

This program fosters healing, resilience, and connection for veterans and first responders through immersive experiences in nature, physical activity, and peer interaction — all core tenets of Higher Ground’s mission.

All wake surfing gear, instruction, and food will be provided. Please bring a towel, sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing for activity and weather.

CRU: Ziplining

A gathering of CRU participants, Veterans and First Responders, to get out and challenge themselves with a Ziplining adventure!  This event includes 6 ziplines total that glide over the Osage Hills. This event aims to improve camaraderie, strengthen connections, and enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation.

CRU: Equine Therapy

Participants will be given an introduction to riding and safety, followed by a Horse Back ride on a trail offered by Kays Acres. Participants will also practice mindfulness at the petting zoo as well as use that time for socialization and check-in. All required gear, safety equipment, and instruction will be provided by professionals. Lunch will be provided afterwards nearby at Placid Turnip Restaurant.

Equine therapy offers several benefits, including improving emotional awareness, enhancing communication skills, and promoting trust and relationship-building. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by encouraging participants to connect with horses, fostering a sense of calm and relaxation. Additionally, it boosts confidence, self-esteem, and social skills, while also providing a safe space for individuals to work through trauma and past experiences. The therapy can also improve physical coordination and motor skills through activities like riding and grooming.
